Soirées Septembre

Castle de Haar

After the death of his father, in 1890, Etienne baron van Zuylen van Nijevelt inherits the castle ruins De Haar. He himself did not have the money to realize his dream and rebuild the castle, but fortunately, three years earlier, in Paris, he had married the wealthy Hélène Baroness de Rothschild. Together they decide to hire a famous architect.

The choice falls on Pierre Cuypers, who made his name with the construction of Amsterdam's Central Station and Rijksmuseum. The ancestral castle is resurrected in an impressive blend of medieval atmosphere and late-nineteenth-century luxury and comfort. For the Van Zuylen-van Nijevelts living in Paris, De Haar serves as a pleasant country retreat.
