Around 1890, the castle is located on an immense plain almost entirely covered with meadows and beautiful orchards. As a result, it is a considerable distance from a railroad station. The baron would therefore like to have access to a large number of horses, carriages and automobiles and consequently of staff. Therefore, there should be large stables with outbuildings, carriage houses and dwellings for the staff.
Buildings for parking (garages), cleaning and repairing automobiles are also highly desirable. Therefore, southwest of the castle on the Bochtdijk, Cuypers designs the Stable Square. Behind the fence wall, the horse stalls are built. In the corner of this courtyard will be a hangar for harnessing, unharnessing and cleaning the horses and carriages.
On the southwest side, the carriages are stabled, along with the saddlery, farrier's workshop, fodder supply, kitchen and dining room for the coachmen and other courtyard personnel. Automobiles are parked and repaired on the north side of the square. The Gasoline Tower is also located there.
Staff housing is located above the coach houses. Since 2005, the Stable Square is no longer inhabited, but Koetshuis de Haar can be found on the square. In addition, the castle store, reception, ticket sales and entrance to the park can also be found here. The Stable Square can also be visited without an entrance ticket.
