The second floor

Room 4

When Baroness Gabrielle was assigned this room by her father-in-law Egmont van Zuylen in the late 1950s, as Baron Thierry's brand-new wife, she was stunned! She had not realized that according to the old noble custom, she would be sleeping separately from her husband in the castle. When it turned out later that room 4 was also haunted, she was completely stupéfait. But not afraid fortunately!

Room 7

This room, at the very southwest corner of the castle, was always occupied in September by Alexis von Rosenberg, Baron de Redé. He was the heart friend of Baroness Marie-Hélène, the eldest sister of Baron Thierry. She always stayed next door in room 8. The interior of this Maple room was restored in 2018. This was also much needed because the ornamental ceiling was slowly but surely coming down in small pieces.

Room 8

This spacious room in soft pink was always used in September by Marie-Hélène van Zuylen van Nijevelt, Thierry's eldest sister. She was married to Guy de Rothschild and although she owned the magnificent Ferrières Palace near Paris and had a choice of several other country houses, she was "crazy" about De Haar. Understandably, because her room here is really a pleasant little apartment in itself.

Room 9

The lodgers who came to De Haar in the early 20th century don't tell us much now, some 100 years later. But the guests who came later had such star status that their names still appeal to our imagination. For example, Coco Chanel and Maria Callas regularly stayed at De Haar. They were both good friends of Baroness Maggie. In those days you could also run into great gentlemen from politics and culture here, such as Georges Pompidou, André Malraux and Jean Cocteau. All from Baron Egmont's address book.
