Haarzuilens

Approximately on the site of the Roman Garden, the ancient village of Haarzuilens was located until 1898. Little is known about the origins of the picturesque hamlet. Presumably, the village originated in the Middle Ages right under the protection that the walls of Castle de Haar could offer the hamlet.

The castle village has barely developed over the centuries. About twenty-five thatched and tiled houses are grouped around a brink covered with large trees. The village also has an inn that also fulfilled the function of a council chamber. Here, at the end of the 19th century, one could buy a ticket to visit the picturesque ruin.

Already in the first concrete plans for the restoration of the castle around 1891, there is talk of a necessary relocation of the old Haarzuilens for the construction of a vast park and hunting area. Hence, the new Haarzuilens is moved 1.5 kilometers east. In 1898 the inhabitants could move into their new houses.

These houses are also built around a trapezoidal brink, on which the village pump is given a prominent place. Besides houses, the village also has a smithy and some stores. The most striking building is Het Wapen van Haarzuilens, designed as an inn and council chamber. There is even a real cachot present! The village school is dedicated to St. Bonifatius.

To this day, De Haar estate, the extensive park and the castle village of Haarzuilens form a Gesamtkunstwerk unique to the Netherlands, a green oasis of peace and quiet in an increasingly crowded and hectic Randstad.
