The stones will fly around your ears!
Discover this exclusive tour
After visiting the castle on your own, giving visitors a glimpse into the flamboyant jet-set life of the Van Zuylen family, it's time for the behind-the-scenes look. A private guide shows hidden places in the castle and tells the special stories, which are hidden behind the castle walls. Discover the castle's weather corridors where staff used to be able to sneak past unseen, circular spiral staircases leading to various towers and bedrooms opened for the first time that can only be viewed during this exclusive tour.
During the additional 60-minute tour, additional visual dimensions provide a unique experience. Various rooms feature scenes on tablets that make the guide's story even more vivid. The visit to the castle and the exclusive complementary tour last about 120 minutes in total.
Tickets are now available on a limited basis!
This exclusive tour can only be booked in combination with a castle ticket. Because the tour has been such a success, we will repeat the tour during the Christmas vacations. Tickets for this will be available from December 18, 2021 to January 9, 2022.
Cuypers' Tower Folly
As early as 1872, Carel Vosmaer complained about Cuypers: 'Towers everywhere, towers and spires, a veritable tower folly.' He was right. Architect Pierre Cuypers had a great fondness for towers and dramatic rooftop landscapes. In countless restorations, he did not hesitate to "complete" monuments by making their towers more impressive and providing them with detailed spires and crowns. This is why 'Torendol' spotlights the castle's striking towers; the masonry in the base of the Gevangentoren, which dates from before 1482, the Dove Tower, whose floors are reached via a narrow spiral staircase that 'twists' in such a way that you can't storm upwards waving a sword in your right hand, and the Knights' Tower where, in the late 1920s, an employee performed breakneck feats and stood on top of the spire!
