Baron Etienne’s Dream – How It All Began
At the end of the nineteenth century, Baron Etienne Van Zuylen van Nijevelt had the dilapidated ruins of the medieval castle rebuilt into an impressive family estate. His ambition was grand: De Haar was to be not only a tribute to his ancestors, but also a country estate where he could entertain his guests in regal style.
Together with his wife, Hélène de Rothschild, he created one of Europe’s most luxurious country estates. Thanks to her wealth, Etienne’s dream became a reality. That grandeur is still evident in the richly decorated halls, the exceptional works of art, and the many refined details throughout the castle.
