September tradition
Around 1900, a tradition started at De Haar that has since been known as "September tradition. Every year at the end of the summer, the baron and baroness move into the castle. They organize grand receptions there in the form of sumptuous dinners and fashionable party evenings. Among their many, often wealthy guests are members of royal families and European nobility, bankers, movie stars and politicians. The September tradition is a serious business. The guests must not lack for anything.
Castle upside down
It takes a lot to get the castle ready for the arrival of family and guests. In the early years, even horses, carriages and automobiles were transported from Paris to the Netherlands by train or boat. In the course of August, more and more staff arrived. Chambermaids, waiters, drivers, the butler, the kitchen crew from France. The whole castle is turned upside down!
