New series of Dutch castles
This year, the Royal Dutch Mint is kicking off its new collector series of Silver Ducats: 'Dutch Castles'. In 2020 as many as four Zilveren Dukaten will appear with a different Dutch castle on each issue. To festively launch the series, the first issue was ceremonially unveiled on February 18 at Castle de Haar. Curator of the castle Katrien Timmers was present, as well as the director of Stichting Exploitatie Kasteel de Haar Anetta de Jong.
Coin Design
Silver Ducats were legal tender in the Netherlands from 1659 to 1847. In 1987, they returned as a collector's coin. Each year, the Royal Dutch Mint mints Silver Ducats on behalf of the Ministry of Finance.
Characteristic of a Silver Ducat is that the obverse always depicts a knight in armor with a shield in front of the left leg with the provincial coat of arms on it. The reverse shows the year of issue and the Latin text "Concordia res Parvae Crescunt": Unity makes power. This was the motto of arms of the Netherlands between 1588 and 1795.
In the "Dutch Castles" series, each issue features Field Marshal Godard van Reede in front of the castle. Godard van Reede (1644 - 1703) served as Governor of Utrecht and followed William III of Orange in claiming the throne of England, Scotland and Ireland. In 1702 he received the rank of field marshal and became commander-in-chief of all Dutch troops.
The maximum edition of the Silver Ducat of Castle de Haar is 2,000 pieces. The Silver Ducat can be ordered at www.knm.nl/kasteeldehaar and will be delivered in luxury packaging inspired by the knight's armor.
